An Emerson Jones vs Yexin Ma prediction should be easy on paper. Jones sits 44 ranking spots above Ma, owns the better return rating, and has A-game wins over Maria, Brengle and Fruhvirtova that make beating a grinder ranked around the #175 mark look routine. The market has her a heavy favorite going in.

The model looked past the ranking gap anyway. Ma is priced at +201 for Monday, September 21, 2026's 10:30 PM ET match in Seoul, and the case for her leans on something the market price does not fully account for: what each player has actually done on court in the last month, and what each one's serve gives away.

Why the model is drawn to Ma

Ma is not walking in cold. She won two rounds of Seoul qualifying this week, beating Zhao 6-3 6-0 and Lee 6-3 6-1, for two hours and seven minutes of match play across two days with a full rest day built in before Monday. Against Lee she won 68% of her service points and 57% of her return points, breaking serve five times in ten chances. Her one-month serve line, first serve won 69.6%, second serve won 59.1%, matches that performance.

The bigger data point sits further back. On July 28, Ma beat Kimberly Birrell, then the World No. 66, 7-6(2) 6-4 in a main-draw match at the Memphis Classic that ran an hour and forty-six minutes. That is a real hard-court scalp against ranked tour opposition, not the kind of result her recent qualifying wins over lower-ranked players would suggest on their own.

The case for Jones

None of this erases why Jones is favored. She is 44 spots higher in the rankings, carries the better return rating at 179 to Ma's 154, and her list of wins includes Maria 6-3 6-3, Brengle and Fruhvirtova. Taking out a player around the #175 mark on a hard court is squarely the kind of match she is built to win, and most nights that profile is enough on its own.

The number that matters: 28 days idle and a leaky second serve

Jones has not finished a match since August 25, a three-set loss to Suzan Lamens in US Open qualifying where she won the second set in a tiebreak and then dropped the decider 2-6. She skipped qualifying in Seoul entirely as a direct main-draw entry, so Monday she arrives 28 days removed from competitive tennis on top of the travel.

Her serve has also been a problem. She is winning just 38% of her second-serve points and has been averaging seven double faults a match over the last three months, roughly 8.8% of her total service points. That is exactly the kind of number Ma can feed on: her return numbers this week show her taking half of the second-serve points she saw. Jones's return game has a matching weakness against players who do not bring pace, winning only 23% of return games and holding serve just 51% of the time in those matchups, and Ma fits that description almost exactly, zero aces against Lee and a career ace rate of 2.8%.

Jones's recent losses reinforce the pattern: Tararudee twice inside ten days, plus Lamens, Gasanova and Bartunkova, all steady, mid-pace baseliners who make her serve out sets rather than hit through them. Her notable wins, by contrast, have mostly come against players on the older or declining side of their careers, Maria at 38, Lepchenko at 40, Brengle at 36, a retiring Zhao, which is not the player standing across the net Monday.

The verdict

This is a PASS. It is not a bet the model is backing, and no official action is going out on it. The read above is what pointed the model toward Ma over the favorite, but a pass means the full case did not clear what it takes to put a play on the board, and the specific reason for that is not something we are stating here. If you are watching the price, Ma is out at +201 for Monday night, but that number is not carrying a recommendation.
