What changed in the Tien review
Tien's five-set win deserves credit for the comeback, but the full sequence makes it a less comfortable form signal than the result alone. He trailed Mensik two sets to one and 0-2 in the fourth set, with Mensik serving at 40-15. Those were game points for a 3-0 lead. Mensik did not have a match point. Tien won four consecutive points to break back and eventually won 6-3, 1-6, 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4. Mensik also won more total points, 155 to Tien's 150. Tien converted seven of fourteen break chances; Mensik converted five of fourteen. Those figures help explain both the opportunities Mensik had and Tien's ability to take the breaks that decided the match. They do not turn a points advantage into a different match result. The recovery window is shorter than first reported
The Mensik match lasted three hours and twenty-four minutes and ended at about 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, September 6. Monday's Khachanov match was scheduled not before 4 p.m. That leaves thirty-eight hours and twenty-five minutes to the earliest scheduled start, rather than the roughly sixty-three hours used in the earlier assessment. The later finish is a concrete recovery concern, not proof that Tien will be tired or unable to compete. The same USTA preview reports that both players had spent a little over seven hours on court across their first three matches. Their similar total court time limits the case for a large established workload advantage. The timing of Tien's last match remains the relevant difference.
Khachanov's improvement is specific to this US Open
Khachanov reached the fourth round with wins over Roman Andres Burruchaga, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Benjamin Bonzi. Their scores add up to nine sets won and one lost. Auger-Aliassime was his second-round opponent; Bonzi was his third-round opponent, beaten 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. The Auger-Aliassime win needs its illness context. He reported dizziness and seeing spots beginning after about a set and a half. That limits what the result establishes about beating a healthy elite opponent. The USTA account's ninety-nine errors refers to total errors, not unforced errors. The official illness report supplies both details. Khachanov's three wins here support an event-specific improvement; they do not establish an elite level throughout the summer.
The verdict
Karen Khachanov is the revised selection after Zach's September 7 review. The change gives more weight to Khachanov's current US Open results, the detailed Mensik match sequence and Tien's corrected recovery window.
