A Sinja Kraus vs Anastasia Potapova prediction usually starts with the price, and this one is steep: Potapova is -455 on the moneyline for their Beijing second-round match, set for Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 11:00 PM ET. On paper that number makes sense. Potapova reached the US Open fourth round a month ago and gets a bye into this round as the No. 16 seed, while Kraus arrives off a grinding week at the WTA 125 level.
But the match isn't as clean as the price suggests, and the model's card has this one marked PASS. No bet is going out on either side.
The knee injury nobody's updated
Potapova hyperextended her left knee at 3-5, 0-15 in the third set of her US Open loss to Mirra Andreeva on September 7. She took a medical timeout, got heavily strapped, and didn't win another point in that match. The following week she withdrew from the Singapore 500 without a stated reason, one of ten players to pull out of that event. That adds up to 24 days without a competitive match, and because of the bye, Beijing R2 against Kraus is her first appearance back. There's no tune-up match in between, and nothing public confirms the knee is fully right.
Kraus is playing through a packed stretch
Kraus, meanwhile, is mid-stretch. She beat Maya Joint 6-3 3-6 7-5 in the Beijing opener on Tuesday, serving for the match at 5-4 in the third before getting broken and needing an extra game to close it out. That capped five matches in ten days, including a three-hour, ten-minute quarterfinal win and a straight-set semifinal loss at the Porto WTA 125, plus the travel from Portugal to Beijing between September 26 and 30. She does get an extra rest day before Thursday's match. But September also brought two lopsided hard-court losses at that level, 1-6 1-6 at Caldas da Rainha and 3-6 0-6 to Reese Brantmeier in Porto, results that don't show up anywhere in the straight head-to-head record. The two have met once, back in April, when Kraus won 6-2 6-7(5) 6-3, worth noting, but that was on clay, so it reads as a secondary data point rather than a guide to how they match up on a hard court.
The serve-return numbers
The shot-by-shot numbers are where this gets interesting. On hard courts this season, Potapova's first serve has been the strongest shot on the court, winning somewhere around 65 to 67 percent of its points; Kraus's first serve has been winning closer to 55 to 58 percent lately. Flip to the return side and Kraus has been winning about 55 percent of points against second serves, which lines up with Potapova's double-fault rate sitting at 6 to 8 percent: that is the clearest opening for Kraus if the match tightens up. Potapova's own return numbers against second serves, around 56 percent, run ahead of what Kraus's second serve has been winning, 46 to 47 percent. Those are the levers that decide a close set more than the seeding or the overall record does.
The verdict
This one carries a PASS on the card: no bet on either side of a -455 line. The knee injury Potapova is working through, the 24 days off, and the fact that Beijing R2 is her first match back all add up to more uncertainty than the price reflects about how her movement holds up.
Kraus looks live in theory: the return numbers and the head-to-head suggest she can make Potapova work for it, but her own September results and the five-matches-in-ten-days stretch cut against leaning on that version of her, too. The gap between those two pictures is why this match stays off the card rather than on it.
