Friday, October 2, 2026 brings an Ashlyn Krueger vs Ann Li prediction out of Beijing that looks simple on the surface and gets complicated fast underneath. First serve is set for 11:00 PM ET, and the market has Li at -111.
Krueger just banked a clean, serve-driven win in round one. Li has not played a tour-level match since September 4, and her first-serve percentage has been sliding for weeks. The twelve-month numbers on hard courts still point to Li, and that is the side the model takes on paper. The card still marks this one a pass, though, not a bet.
Why the model is on Li
Strip away the most recent form and look at the twelve-month hard-court record against similarly ranked schedules: Li holds serve 71% of the time and wins 33% of her return games, while Krueger holds 70% and wins just 23% of return games. That return-game gap is the backbone of this side. The model also rates Li as a first-strike returner (0.92), and over the last year Krueger is 0-7 on hard courts against players who fit that profile, winning only 14% of return games in those matches.
Li's best hard-court wins this season have also come against tougher competition than Krueger's best wins: opponents rated in roughly the 79th, 74th and 67th percentiles for Li, against the 71st, 49th and 46th for Krueger. Kenin, Krueger's round one victim, already has a win over Krueger on the books — 7-6(2), 6-4 in Madrid back in April — but that came on clay, so it reads as context on how deep this field is, not as hard-court form for Friday.
The case for Krueger
Krueger's round one win over Kenin was clean and earned on serve: 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and fifteen minutes, with 8 aces and 81% of first-serve points won. That is the only result in Krueger's file since September 30, and it matters because of what came before it. Krueger retired against Osaka on July 29 with a right-ankle injury and went 0-2 at tour level afterward — losses to Boisson in Cincinnati (3-6, 2-6) and Anisimova in the US Open first round (1-6, 3-6) — before reaching the US Open doubles final with Montgomery, a match Krueger lost on September 11. The Kenin win is the clearest sign yet that the post-injury rust is clearing, and it came on a light workload: one match, 75 minutes, across the previous two weeks, with the round two match landing one to two days later.
Li, meanwhile, has not been seen since a September 4 finish and withdrew from Singapore without an explanation, handing her spot to Sasnovich. No injury has been confirmed behind that withdrawal, but a month with no match play, paired with a bye into this round as the 21st seed, means Friday is effectively a cold start for Li against a Krueger who already has a set of real points in her legs this week.
The number that matters
The clash to watch is Li's return against Krueger's second serve. Li wins 54% of her return points against second serves, while Krueger's second-serve points won have fallen in every recent window: 47% over the past year, 41% over the last three months, and 39% in the Kenin match, with double faults on nearly 10% of Krueger's service points over the last three months. Set against Krueger's 23% hard-court return-game rate, that leaves Krueger little margin to break back if Li finds any return rhythm early.
The swing factor against Li is her own first serve, which has been sinking in every window checked: 58% over the past year, 53% over the last three months, 49% in September, and 43% in her loss to Noskova at the US Open. The real counter-signal is that Li is just 2-5 against mid-pace servers in Krueger's mold, though that is a seven-match sample skewed by how well those particular opponents return. None of that reverses the twelve-month baseline on hard courts; it only narrows it heading into Friday.
The verdict
This one is marked a pass on the card: no official action from the desk on Friday's Krueger-Li match in Beijing. The hard-court numbers and the model's own reasoning lean toward Li, but the pass stands on its own regardless, and it should be read simply as not a bet we are making, with nothing more implied about why.
