Dana White's Contender Series Week 9 pairs a counter-striking specialist against a forward-moving grappler, and on tape the matchup tilts hard toward one specific exchange: what happens when Mateus Soares closes distance on a kicker who has been taken down and choked out in three of his last several appearances. The desk has this logged as research only, no play, but the read is not close.
Mateus Soares

Soares fights behind pressure and a power double leg, the kind of entry that put him on top against Lee with sustained fence-clinch work. He backs it with real hands, scoring right-hand knockdowns against Junior, and he has shown a specific, repeatable counter for kickers: catching the kick and turning it straight into a sweep or a takedown, a sequence he has pulled off in two separate fights. Eight of his eleven career wins have ended in the first round, which says as much about his finishing instinct as it does about how quickly he imposes his style on an opponent.
Ryuho Miyaguchi

Miyaguchi brings the look of a problem on paper: he is roughly five inches taller than Soares, works off kicks to the body and crescent kicks, and has a finishing sequence he has gone to twice against Ishihara, hunting a front-headlock choke, the same choke family that has beaten Soares before. But the tape under that profile is uneven. A counter left hand dropped him against Ishihara. Eda took him down and left him static on the bottom, giving up his back. Komiyama and Ishihara both got him down as well. Most recently, Koren's forward pressure and takedown attempts turned into a left-hook knockdown, exposed his back, and ended in a rear naked choke in May 2026. He also showed visible fatigue late in the second round against Koren, and he has described himself as a slow starter.
How the fight plays out
Strip away the height and the reach and this becomes a question of what Miyaguchi does when a pressure fighter closes the gap and starts hunting a leg. The answer, on recent tape, is not good: he gets hit clean on the way down, he gives up his back once he is there, and he has been finished from exactly that position before. Soares does not even need a new game plan to exploit it. He already has the double leg, the fence-clinch control, and a documented habit of turning a caught kick into a takedown, which lines up directly against a fighter whose offense runs through body and crescent kicks.
The counter threat Miyaguchi carries, the straight right or intercepting knee he could borrow from the Mackson Lee tape, is real on paper, but it requires Soares to advance carelessly, head down, and nothing in Soares' own tape shows that habit. More likely this plays out like Miyaguchi's last several losses: pressure, a kick caught or a takedown attempt that lands, and a fight that ends on the mat rather than on the feet. The slow-starter tag and the second-round fatigue against Koren only sharpen the window, especially against a finisher who has shown he does not need a second round to close the show.
The verdict
The pick is Soares. His caught-kick-to-takedown sequence is a near-literal counter to Miyaguchi's kicking offense, and Miyaguchi's last three documented losses all came from exactly the position Soares' pressure and double leg put him in.
