Yulia Putintseva is a massive favorite to beat Sayaka Ishii in their second-round match at Tokyo, set for Sunday, October 25, 2026 at 1:20 AM ET. The market has Putintseva at -556 on the moneyline, and on paper that price looks automatic. Our Yulia Putintseva vs Sayaka Ishii prediction digs into why the gap isn't quite that clean, and why the desk still isn't making this a bet.

Both players are fresh off straight-set wins in their Tokyo openers on October 24: Putintseva beat wildcard Hayu Kinoshita 7-5, 6-2, and Ishii beat alternate Kyoka Okamura 6-4, 6-3. That's where the easy part of the comparison ends.

Why the market still likes Putintseva

Putintseva's results over the last month back up the price. She's beaten players ranked well inside the top 100 at WTA 1000 and 500 level, including a win over #59 Sonmez and a clean, earned victory over Krueger. Even her losses have been competitive: she took Shnaider to 92-94 in total points across a 7-5, 7-6 defeat. That's a player performing at or above her 12-month hard-court baseline, not someone sliding.

Her return game is the clearest edge in this matchup. Putintseva wins 59% of second-serve return points and takes roughly 40% of her return games on hard courts, which is a problem for any opponent who doesn't serve big. Her own serve is soft by tour standards, barely 1.8% aces and holding 63-67% of her own service games, so most of her matches get decided by what she does on the other side of the net.

Ishii's case, and where it runs out

Ishii isn't just a wildcard being fed to a favorite. She reached the Tokyo quarter-finals in 2024 as a qualifier, beating top qualifying seed Tauson along the way, so this event has suited her before. Her October form is also a real step up from her season line: she's won 55.9% of her second-serve points this month and cut her double-fault rate to 7.6%, down from 8.9% over the last 12 months. If that serve holds up again here, her power is the one thing in this draw that could trouble Putintseva's modest service games.

The gap is still the problem. Ishii is ranked 589, with a 2026 season high of 407 and a career-best of 188 back in March 2025. Her results this month have come against players ranked in the 114-244 range, not against anyone near Putintseva's level. And her serve, even improved, is still finding only 58.6% of first serves over the last year, which is exactly the kind of number Putintseva's return game is built to punish.

The workload wrinkle

There is a scheduling edge here, and it belongs to Ishii. Sunday's match is Putintseva's 9th in 16 days, with 744 minutes on court over the prior two weeks. Ishii, by contrast, is playing her 4th match in 9 days and has logged only 239 minutes over the same window. Fatigue is a real variable against a healthy, rested opponent who can hit through the court.

It's worth noting Putintseva has a soft spot in her record against exactly this kind of opponent: she's 4-6 with a 55% hold rate against weak servers, even though she's otherwise dominant on return. Ishii, with her first-serve and double-fault numbers, fits that profile more than most of Putintseva's recent opposition has.

Why this grades as a pass

Even with all of that said, this one comes back as a PASS on our card. That's not a soft lean or a quiet preference, it's a clear no-play: we aren't backing either side of this match at this price. The handicapping above explains how the model sees the matchup, not why it landed on a pass, and we're not going to pretend otherwise by backfilling a reason that wasn't the actual basis for sitting out.

The verdict

Putintseva's résumé over the last month, and her return game specifically, explain why the market has her this short. Ishii's rest, her history in Tokyo, and a genuinely improved October serve are the reasons this isn't as lopsided a matchup as -556 suggests. Both things can be true at once, and the result here is a pass: no bet from our side on Putintseva or Ishii.
