Our Elena Rybakina vs Polina Kudermetova prediction for Thursday, October 22, 2026 (7:00 AM ET) starts with a market that looks like a formality. Rybakina is priced at -2500, and on paper that's not crazy: her hard-court form over the last twelve months is 44-8, with an 84% hold rate and 32% of return games won. Against a 105th-ranked opponent, that's usually an easy price to respect.

The model isn't backing it. The tier here is PASS — no official action on this one — and the reason isn't that Kudermetova suddenly looks like the better player. It's that Rybakina's body has become the real opponent, and a -2500 price doesn't leave any room for that kind of doubt.

Why the matchup still favors Rybakina on paper

Strip away the health questions and this is a clean stylistic mismatch. Rybakina's first-strike serve has won 74% of first-serve points over the last year with a 9.6% ace rate — the kind of number that, on a healthy day, should let her hold serve at a high clip regardless of who's across the net. Kudermetova's second serve has won just 42% of points with an 8.6% double-fault rate, and that's exactly the shot Rybakina's 55% second-serve return rate is built to attack.

Kudermetova's own hard-court hold rate over twelve months sits at 63%, and against servers in the middle tier — not even Rybakina's level — she's held only 49% of the time across six matches. If this were simply a serve-versus-return puzzle, it wouldn't be much of one.

The foot problem that won't go away

It isn't simply a serve-versus-return puzzle, because Rybakina is walking into Ningbo with an eight-week injury trail. The Achilles and foot issue traces back to an Aug. 20 retirement in the Cincinnati quarterfinal. By her own federation's account, she played deep into the US Open on painkillers. She then skipped the BJK Cup Finals for at least two weeks of treatment, and said before her next tournament that she could "still feel it here and there."

Her most recent match, an Oct. 3 loss to world No. 118 Alina Charaeva in Beijing, is the clearest data point we have. Rybakina led by a set and a break, then unraveled: seven double faults, only 60.4% of first-serve points won, and Charaeva converting 5 of 8 break points down the stretch. Afterward, Rybakina said she'd felt her foot late in the match. She then withdrew from Wuhan with the foot injury and hasn't played since — 19 days of rest, broken only by a first-round bye into this event. At Ningbo media day, she talked about "managing the fitness" rather than declaring herself pain-free.

None of that shows up in a -2500 price. A market built on a 44-8 season doesn't automatically discount a player who went 0-1 with a withdrawal the moment the injury showed up.

Kudermetova's hot week, and its limits

Kudermetova arrives having won three straight in Ningbo — a qualifying run through Mananchaya Sawangkaew and Anastasia Zakharova, then a main-draw win over wildcard Cristina Bucsa — and the serving numbers are real. She's won 70% of her service points in the event, well above her 56% average over the past year, and she's held 24 of 29 service games (83%), also well above her 63% hard-court hold rate for the year. Twenty-three aces against 16 double faults is roughly in line with her usual rate, so this isn't just free points from a hot ace streak.

It comes with caveats. Bucsa, Sawangkaew and Zakharova are opponents well outside the top 70, and between them they handed Kudermetova 24 double faults — a meaningful chunk of her return production came from their mistakes rather than her return game. She's also played four matches in 14 days counting an Oct. 10 qualifying loss, though Tuesday was a rest day and there's no reported injury on her side. Over the past year she's 10-11 on hard courts, and nothing in this week's run is a win over anyone near Rybakina's level. The serving uptick narrows the gap. It doesn't erase it.

The verdict

This is a PASS, not a lean and not a quiet play — the model isn't backing either side of this one at the board. The case for Rybakina's game is still there: an elite hard-court serve-and-return profile against a second serve that's vulnerable to exactly that kind of pressure. But the version of Rybakina on the court right now is coming off a loss to a player ranked 118 spots below her, a withdrawal, and nearly three weeks of silence on whether the foot is actually right. At a market price with almost no margin for error, that's not a gap we're comfortable pricing either way, so we're sitting this one out.
