Why the model leans Vacherot

Over the past twelve months on hard courts, Vacherot holds serve in 84% of his service games and wins 18% of his return games, against Navone's 77% and 15%. Both gaps favor Vacherot, and they show up in matches that matter: wins over Fils in a three-set Tokyo quarterfinal and over Baez in Shanghai, both inside the last three weeks, both on hard courts. Vacherot's game is built to end points early, with aces on close to 12% of his service points, and against a player who wins only 15% of his return games on hard, that first-strike profile should travel well into Basel.

Navone's broader hard-court résumé backs that lean too: he's just 11-25 on hard over the last two years, a mark built mostly on clay and now being asked to hold up again on hard.

The case against: Navone's blueprint

Navone has already beaten Vacherot once this year, 1-6 6-3 6-3 in Montreal back in August, a match graded as an earned win: Navone took 82 total points to Vacherot's 77, despite similar service numbers on both sides. The blueprint from that match is the same one that just beat Vacherot again. Luca Van Assche won their Lyon R16 last week 6-2 4-6 4-6, coming back after dropping the opening set by leaning on long rallies and return points.

Navone's own recent form reads like the same template. He out-lasted Juan Manuel Cerundolo in a first-set tiebreak and pushed Tallon Griekspoor to 5-7 in the second at Brussels, the kind of grinding, hold-your-serve-and-wait tennis that has given Vacherot trouble since his return from injury. Navone still holds at an 85% clip against first-strike servers on hard, and his own hard-court losses are stacked with that same type of player, including Griekspoor and Fils. That cuts both ways: it's exactly the game style Vacherot brings, and also the game style that has already beaten Navone.

The number that matters

That second serve is the swing factor here. Vacherot has won 45% of his second-serve points over the past three months, and that number slipped to 43% in the Lyon loss, with only 30 of 57 total service points won two weeks earlier against Paul. Some of that dip has a plain explanation: Vacherot is still working back from a left foot stress fracture that forced a walkover at Roland Garros and cost him the entire grass season. He's been back competing since July, and his hard-court record since returning is just 6-7.

Navone is trending the other way: his second serve is running 54% over the same three-month stretch, and he won 63 to 66% of his total service points across two matches in Brussels last week. Since early August the two are even on hard courts, 6-7 apiece, and both of last week's losses were desperately close. Vacherot's loss to Van Assche finished level on total points, 85-85, and Navone's loss to Griekspoor was 71-74. Vacherot is also working on three full rest days in Basel after that Lyon loss, against four for Navone. None of this reverses the twelve-month case for Vacherot. It just explains why the model isn't backing a -196 price on a player whose serve numbers are heading the wrong way against someone who has already solved him once.

The verdict

This is a PASS. The fundamentals still tilt toward Vacherot over a full season, but the recent form, the tight scorelines, and the second-serve slide are enough that the desk isn't putting a play out at -196. No bet here, just a match worth watching.
