Yi Zhou vs Lorenzo Musetti prediction for Shanghai: Musetti is -667 on the board, but a fractured finger and a leaky serve keep this off our card.

Any Yi Zhou vs Lorenzo Musetti prediction this week starts with the price. Musetti is priced at -667 in Shanghai, a number that says the market isn't worried about his month off. We looked at the same matchup and came away less sure.

This one grades out to a PASS. That's an official-card PASS, meaning no official action goes out on it, win or lose. Here's the case for Musetti, the case against him, and why the gap between them is wide enough to leave this alone.

The price says blowout

On name value, -667 makes sense. Over the last 12 months Musetti has gone 22-13 against similar-level opposition, holding serve in 82% of his service games and winning 24% of his return games against that group. His best wins this year came against Fritz, De Minaur, Korda and Rublev. Zhou's best win on record is Norrie, with his Bellucci result this week a tier below even that.

Zhou earned his trip to this round. He beat Mattia Bellucci in Shanghai's first round 6-4 3-6 7-6(4), saving a match point at 5-6 in the third, and held his own on serve with 12 aces against 3 double faults. But the match was a near coin flip on total points, 107-105, and his second serve cracked at 43%. Two matches before that, he lost to J.M. Cerundolo without earning a single break.

The serve that hasn't held up

Musetti hasn't played since withdrawing from Tokyo on September 30 with a small fracture in the ring finger of his right hand, suffered in practice. By his own account the finger no longer bothers him, and he's had about two days of racket training, but he's also described his own shape as far from ideal, and this is now his fourth physical stoppage of the year.

The serve is the part that's been leaking even before the layoff: double faults on 5.3% of his service points over the last three months, and in his last completed match, a loss to Dane Sweeny at the US Open, he made 7 double faults and won just 53% of his first-serve points. A rusty hand on top of that is not a small thing for a player whose hold game is normally the foundation of his edge.

History isn't kind here either. His first match back from each of his three earlier 2026 stoppages went 1-2: a loss to Fucsovics at Indian Wells, a loss to Vacherot at Monte Carlo, and a win over Arnaldi in Washington that came by retirement. The Monte Carlo result was on clay and only illustrates the broader rust pattern, not anything specific to a hard court like Shanghai's, but the Indian Wells loss came on the same surface Musetti plays on this week.

Why it's still Musetti and not Zhou

None of that flips the pick to Zhou. His own return game is the problem. Against Bellucci, his first-serve return points won sat at 25% and he converted just 1 of 6 break points. Against Cerundolo, he didn't break at all. A player who struggles to take games off a rusty serve isn't built to punish one, and Musetti's own return game against mid-level competition, a 10-4 record and 26% of return games won, lines up well against exactly that kind of weak second serve and shaky break-point conversion.

Zhou also has a history of folding from ahead, having lost from a set up five times already this year against players like Kotov, Dodig, Harris, Tabilo and De Jong. A rusty Musetti is still working with more tools than Zhou has shown he can finish with.

The verdict

Put together, the model likes Musetti's game more than the market's price might suggest it should worry about, and it likes it clearly enough to lean that way on paper. But this is a PASS, not a play, and we are not putting any official action behind it today. We're not naming the exact reason that kept it off the card, only that the fundamentals here didn't clear the bar to bet, in either direction.
