Dana White's Contender Series Season 10 keeps handing out style clashes, and this one has a template already sitting on tape. Antonio Monteiro is live off the back foot with a real finishing threat, but his most recent high-level test exposed a specific hole: a forward-pressure wrestler who gets in on the hips and stacks him. Tyshawn Williams is that fighter, and the desk has this logged as a lean toward Williams with no market attached.

Antonio Monteiro

Monteiro's calling card is the finish from anywhere, including off his back. He's a submission-first grappler with six or more finishes by tap, headlined by a guard armlock he pulled off from the bottom position, the kind of detail that tells you he's dangerous even when a fight goes horizontal against him. That's a real weapon on this level.

But his last look at legitimate opposition, the 2024 DWCS loss to del Valle, showed the other side of that coin. Del Valle out-landed him 125 to 188 against Monteiro's 59 of 120, and banked 346 seconds of control time. Tape from 16:03 to 17:15 shows Monteiro's submission instincts kicking in only after he's already underneath and absorbing strikes, not before. His 2021 tape has the same pattern earlier in his career: he keeps conceding his neck on entries and ending up on the bottom. He's also 31.2 years old, coming off a 445 day layoff, with three fights in three years. That's not a full-time, in-the-gym pace against a live opponent.

Tyshawn Williams

Williams is a phase-and-position fighter. Every one of the three fight films the team has accepted on him shows the same repeatable pattern: forward entries into forceful fence takedowns, then top stacking all the way to mount. That's not a one-off look, it's his A-to-B game across the whole sample. He's got the pedigree to back it up too, a verified SoCon conference title and an NCAA Division I wrestling qualification underneath the cage skill.

He's also live. Williams carries an eight-fight winning streak with five finishes into this card, the kind of form and continuous activity Monteiro doesn't currently have. The one flag on his side of the ledger is a weight miss, he needed a second attempt to make 146, though both attempts ultimately landed him on the number. It's a detail worth noting on a short-week card, but it isn't why this pick is on the board. What's unsampled on Williams is his response to deep submission threats and his recovery once someone gets his back exposed underneath him. None of the accepted footage tests that, which is real, but it's a gap in the data, not evidence against him.

How the fight plays out

This fight is a phase problem before it's anything else, and the tape says Monteiro loses that phase. Williams' entire accepted sample is forward pressure into a fence takedown and a stack to mount, the same shape of attack that beat Monteiro his last time out against real competition. Del Valle didn't need a finish to win that fight, he needed volume from top position and 346 seconds of control, and Monteiro's own reflex under that pressure was to hunt a submission from underneath rather than to stop the takedown in the first place.

There's a live path for Monteiro here, and it's the one his whole resume is built on: if Williams gets careless on a level change, or stacks him without controlling the far arm, Monteiro's six-plus submission finishes include exactly the kind of bottom-position armlock that ends nights early. That's a real puncher's chance, or in this case a grappler's chance, and it's why this isn't a blowout read. But it asks Williams to repeat a specific mistake nobody has caught him in across three straight fight films, while asking Monteiro to solve a problem that already beat him once, on short preparation time after more than a year away from live competition. The APEX judging lean toward the house style, forward pressure and control time, doesn't help Monteiro's case if this goes to the cards either.

The verdict

The desk lands on Williams. His documented entry-to-stack game is a near copy of the only recent tape that's beaten Monteiro, and Monteiro's age, layoff, and thin recent pace cut against him closing that gap on short notice. This is a research lean only, logged with no market attached and no money on it.
